(10) Building the Northdown Road

I built these walls with my hands
About 150  years later the same street still stands
A testament to the work and skill
Of building houses upon the hill
And along the Northdown Road

There were only fields when we started out
But soon whole streets were all about
Bricks and wood, windows and doors
Building upwards ; two or three floors
All along the Northdown Road.

And when today you pass by
Lifting your eyes to the sky
And see the Brick chimneys tall
Lined up in a row, one and all
All along the Northdown Road.

We built many facades great
With architecture so ornate
Block Modillions and Cornices bold
Carved in the Roman style of old
All along the Northdown Road

Now things have moved on apace here and there
Since we built Caroline Square
Different styles we when made
with Doric pillar and balustrade
All along the Northdown Road
